Rockland Read-In Skype

Mr. Meher’s and Ms. Drake’s Grade 6 Humanities class Skyped with Linda Chin-Meher’s first grade in East Ramapo’s Summit Elementary School.

The first graders opened the video conference by singing a song, “Don’t Laugh at Me,” to great applause by Suffern. Our students then read several picture books: Matthew Donovan, Isam Khan, and Cole Bower read My Lucky Day by Keiko Kasza. Leigha Pauly, Claire Myers and Sarah Skulsky read Mabela the Clever by Margaret MacDonald.  Jared Simon read a poem, “The Mouse and the Motorcycle” from The Tighty Whitey Spider and More Wacky Animals Poems I Totally Made Up by Kenn Nesbitt.

East Ramapo students shared some of their writings. We heard a review of Arthur’s First Sleepover by Marc Brown.

We spent the rest of the time talking about what we do in our respective schools. Ms. Meher’s students wanted to know what we study in sixth grade. Chris Perich said that, “We learn everything you learn, but a little more advanced since we are in a higher grade.” Cole Bower told the first graders about what they learn in sixth grade math, and we learned that the Summit students do many of the same things.  Aaron Rubenstein talked about our Foreign Language program.

Many thanks to Mr. Meher and Ms. Chin-Meher for organizing this engaging celebration of reading. We hope to see our new friends at Summit Elementary School again soon.
